First ring
“One hour of business was worth more than a year of work.”

— Ariel · When I sold my first ring for double its price.

The journey

Ten chapters, one life

1980
The beginning

From Colón, Matanzas, to Miami

Ariel was born in Colón, a small town in Matanzas, Cuba. In 1980, his uncle paid for the boat that brought them to the United States. They arrived through the Mariel boatlift.

The first house they rented in Miami was so old that his grandmother fell through the bathroom floor while showering. One bedroom, one bathroom, a small dining area, mice that walked like cats.

Today he tells it with some nostalgia. Back then, it wasn't funny: it was the price of starting from zero in a new country.

1991
First job

11 years old, my uncle's supermarket

His first job was at 11, at his uncle's supermarket on 27th Avenue. He wasn't paid: the deal was to help the family that had opened the door to America for them.

He cleaned the supermarket, cleaned the parking lot, restocked beer and soda fridges. Here he learned what $40 actually cost.

He also sold avocados from the backyard tree on a makeshift cart, a dollar each. "I was always a businessman. I wanted to give my parents a better life."

1995
The ring

$50 that became $100

At 15 he started legally at Publix. He worked there for 14 years. Became a butcher — the highest-paid butcher in the company. They trained him as a Systems Manager.

But one day, at a pawn shop near the supermarket, he bought a ring for $50. He wore it every day, even behind the register. A customer in his line offered him $100. He accepted.

That afternoon, something shifted in his head forever: "One hour of business was worth more than a year of work. I had to go back."

He went back to the pawn shop. Bought two rings. Sold them. Bought four rings and two bracelets. Started using his Publix salary to build inventory. When he had a small cloth with five rings, two bracelets and two chains, he already felt like a jeweler.

Discipline, focus, consistency. There's no other formula.

1992
The first robbery

Four masked men in my house

Four armed and masked men broke into his home. They robbed him. Ariel and his family came out physically unharmed. But something changed.

From that day on, Ariel has no keys to any store. He doesn't open or close any of them. Neither does his wife. There's never more than $100 cash in his house. If he goes out, he carries only cards. He doesn't manage any alarm codes himself.

"That was one of the first hard lessons of the business. It teaches you to separate gold from gold. And to respect what you've built."

1993-94
The street

175 clients, door to door

While still at Publix, he sold jewelry on the street. He built a list of 175 clients who paid him on credit: $50, $100 a week, $120 every two weeks.

The safe money was Publix. The real money was the street. But he couldn't let go of either. Not yet.

1994
First store

The Baby — 13220 SW 8th St

He opened his first physical store on SW 8th St. Affectionately called "the Baby": the smallest, the oldest, the least comfortable. But the first.

José Duarte, a dear friend (rest in peace), opened the store in the mornings while Ariel finished his Publix shift at 11. When José passed in an accident, Ariel had no choice: he left Publix and went full-time on the store.

Store 3 opened in 2002. Store 4 in 2007. The first business cards said "Ariel Joyero" and the word "beeper" was misspelled. He laughed about it years later.

Years later
The second robbery

The professional heist in Hialeah

Two men robbed several businesses in a Hialeah strip mall in broad daylight. They held the employees of the next-door shipping store hostage. They cut a hole in the wall to access Ariel's store 5. They took almost everything. Multi-million dollar loss.

At the time, the store had over 7,000 active clients with items on consignment or repair. Ariel replaced everything for everyone in 3-4 months. "99.99% of customers stood by me. A tiny minority called the police thinking I had robbed myself. Day after day. It was brutal."

Two years later they caught the perpetrators. They served 20 years in prison. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. That's real."

Make sure the customer leaves happy. That's my word.

Family

Yuliet, my right hand and my wife

Ten years ago, Yuliet entered Ariel's life. Mother of his children. Co-founder of the project. The creative mind behind every custom piece.

The big decisions, they make them together. "If you ask me, we're the perfect couple — but we can't say it too much." Yulimar, Yuliet's sister, runs operations across the seven stores.

Ariel is reserved. Opening up to the camera took time. But when he talks about his family, the business stops being about gold chains: it becomes about what you build with someone by your side.

Today
Seven stores

One brand, one uniform, one promise

Today there are seven stores across Miami, Hialeah, Doral and North Miami. The seventh — the latest — opened five years ago. All with the same uniform: wood-tone furniture, white floors, white and deep-blue walls, bulletproof glass, sound, lighting.

Each store averages 18-20 transactions a day. Multiply that by seven. That's Ariel's Jewelry. But it's not about squeezing every transaction: "If you make $100 extra on one customer, multiply that by twenty transactions across seven stores. You don't need to kill the customer. Make them leave happy."

Every Monday, team meetings at every store. The difference is taught: "Good morning. Thank you for visiting us. Thank you for being in our store. Thank you for the opportunity." That's what makes the customer come back, refer, bring the cousin, the brother, the son.

Tomorrow
What's next

Other states, same name

The next step is to expand beyond Miami. Other states. The same promise. The same family behind every piece.

"I give 120% to this. For me, it's not work. A lot of people have friends who live more than them. They're right: I'm giving up things to build this. But when you love what you do, it's not sacrifice. It's choice."

That's the story. And it's not over.

“Make sure the customer leaves happy. That's my word.”
